3M™ ESPE™Sinfony™ Magic Shades Now Available
ST. PAUL, Minn. – (Nov. 6, 2002) - Dentists now can utilize the light-curable 3M™ ESPE™ Sinfony™ Magic Shades to simulate the natural shade transitions and other specific colorations of direct, indirect and temporary restorations. Originally developed for use with 3M™ ESPE™ Sinfony™ Indirect Lab Composite, Sinfony Magic Shades now can be used with additional products such as 3M™ ESPE™ Paradigm™ MZ100 Block for CEREC® and 3M™ ESPE™ Protemp™ 3 Garant™ Temporization Material.
Comprising 11 tints, Sinfony Magic Shades enable technicians to create a wide range of special effects in restorations. Providing shade effects similar to porcelain, Sinfony Magic Shades can be used to reproduce all shade nuances and characterizations such as cracks in enamel, mamelons, decalcified areas, imitation fillings and wear facets, as well as various special effects in the cervical, pit and fissure or enamel region. Sinfony Magic Shades are available in the following pastel tones: Ocean Blue, Atlantis, Chestnut, Havana, Orange, Khaki, Vanilla, Honey Yellow, Gingiva, Red, and Terracotta. A Neutral Transparent Opal material is also available.
“Now doctors can enjoy the versatility, reliability and esthetics they’ve come to associate with the Sinfony product line,” explains Tracy Bonvino, lab products sales manager, 3M ESPE. “Utilizing Sinfony Magic Shades will enable them to enhance direct, indirect and temporary restorations regardless of the 3M ESPE products they employ.”
To apply Sinfony™ Magic Shades, first roughen the surface to be characterized (a milled surface is sufficiently rough) and apply 3M™ ESPE™ RelyX™ Ceramic Primer to clean and prime the surface. Then, apply two consecutive coats of 3M™ ESPE™ Adper™ Single Bond Adhesive and cure for 10 seconds. Apply tint or restorative, cure 10 seconds for initial set and check fit of restoration. Final cure for 40 seconds.
Sinfony Magic Shades can be purchased in a Sinfony Magic Set that includes the nine most popular shades, plus a dispenser hand piece and shade guide. In addition, all tints and the transparent opal material can be purchased individually as single packs.

3M ESPE Introduces Nanocomposite
New restorative marks use of nanotechnology, resulting in a truly universal material.
ST. PAUL, Minn. – (September 3, 2002) - 3M ESPE has created a new generation of universal composite: 3M™ ESPE™ Filtek™ Supreme Universal Restorative is designed to offer excellent strength and esthetics for all anterior and posterior restorations. 3M ESPE’s nanocomposite combines the strength of a hybrid and the beauty of a microfill.
“Filtek Supreme Universal Restorative has excellent handling properties and color density,” said Dr. Nicholas Davis, Newport Beach, Calif. “These characteristics make it easy to blend with natural tooth structures.”
The nanosized filler particles used in Filtek Supreme universal restorative allow for the polishability and polish retention typical of a microfill, yet also provide the excellent handling, strength and wear properties that are needed for universal indications. The unique range of shades and opacities allows for excellent results with either single or multi-layer restorations. The new restorative is available in 30 shades and four opacities – dentin, enamel, body and translucent.
“If dentists typically use one shade of material for an individual restoration, they’ll appreciate Filtek Supreme universal restorative’s ease of handling and long-term polish retention,” said Dawn McArthur, marketing supervisor, 3M ESPE. “However, if they typically employ two or more shades to craft an esthetic restoration, dentists will be able to choose from 30 shades and four opacities available. Whichever way you slice it, Filtek Supreme universal restorative is the answer for dentists’ restorative needs.”
3M™ ESPE™ Filtek™ Supreme Universal Restorative marks 3M ESPE’s first use of nanotechnology, where two fillers – nanomers and nanoclusters – are used to achieve a combination of strength and esthetics beyond what current restoratives offer. The nanomer particles are individual filler particles, either 20 or 75 nm in size (0.02; 0.075 microns). Nanoclusters are loosely agglomerated collections or clusters of nanoparticles.
The combination of nanomers and nanoclusters give Filtek Supreme universal restorative the edge over hybrid composites in polish and polish retention. “In restoratives, the smaller the particle size, the better the polishability,” continued McArthur. The average particle size of fillers in microhybrids is 0.4 to 0.6 microns. As these materials are abraded, the surface smoothness is reduced by filler particles protruding from the surface and loss of filler particles resulting in formation of craters. In the Filtek Supreme universal restorative, however, the nanomer particles of the cluster, not the entire cluster, wear away during abrasion.
Moreover, the combination of nanomers and nanoclusters allows for high filler loading and thus the high strength of hybrids and microhybrids with superior handling characteristics.
In addition to Filtek Supreme universal restorative’s other benefits, 3M ESPE also has developed a unique and easy-to-use shade selection system that helps match the VitaPan® Classical Shade Guide. The 3M™ ESPE™ Shade Selector Wheel simplifies the shade selection process and serves as a guide for placing one to four layers of composite. Whether opting for single or multiple shading, dentists will be able to meet their patient's most challenging expectations.
